At City Gardens Dental, we understand that maintaining good oral hygiene can be especially challenging for individuals with special needs or sensory sensitivities. For some children and adults, heightened responses to touch, sound, or taste can make even simple dental routines feel overwhelming.
Toothbrushing, for example, can be a major barrier. Traditional toothbrushes may feel “spiky” or abrasive, and the vibrations of electric brushes can be overstimulating. Fortunately, there are alternatives. Toothbrushes with silicone or soft nylon bristles—such as U-shaped or three-sided brushes—can be gentler and more tolerable. Finger brushes and tooth wipes, like those from Jack N’ Jill, are also popular options. These can be sourced from specialist retailers or your local pharmacy.
Toothpaste flavour can also be a hurdle. Many children dislike mint or strong tastes, but there are now a variety of alternative flavours available—and in some cases, compounding pharmacies can create flavour-free options upon request.
In our clinic, we’re committed to creating a comfortable and supportive experience.
Upon request, we can offer:
- A quiet environment (TV and music off)
- Dimmed lighting
- Weighted blankets or fidget tools
- Adjusted or reduced use of flavoured products
If you or your child has particular sensory preferences or challenges, please let us know ahead of your appointment. Our friendly team will do everything we can to make your visit feel calm, personalised, and positive.
